Our current culture is based on immediacy, burgeoning with technology and busy schedules. With so much social media at our fingertips, it's easy to know about someone, yet be completely disconnected with them. With the prevalence of gadgets in our lives, in some ways we are melding with our electronics. Forgetting a cell phone at home creates a feeling of anxiety, not liberation. It is foreign to think of how we survived daily without being available at a moment's notice. The imagery of robots within my work subtly suggests at that merging of people and devices – personifying the disparate loneliness and separation that social media has created.
I constantly struggle between my daily activities and taking time for real conversation. Like many, I get lost within the tangle of the internet and daily life. My work is meant to bring people together in real space and time. Whether subliminal or overt, I want to create a desire for grouping and human interaction despite the distractions bombarding daily life. The whimsical drawings start a conversation and hopefully bring some diverting joy to a chaotic world.
I am fascinated by the minds of children – the what-ifs and whys that spark looping conversations of wonder. Through my work, I am trying to recapture that youthful mindset and playful nature. I want my work to inspire story telling and fantasy. However, I enjoy some ambiguity in my work so the viewer can make their own decisions as to how the story goes.
